Out and about over the weekend in the north of Cumbria we had chance to look across to the fells near Caldbeck and towards the tv transmitter site.
Although a little cloudy, obscuring the view a little, it would appear that work is well underway to dismantle the old Caldbeck television mast.
Built in 1961 it was 1,030ft ( 313.94 m) tall.
Due to digital switchover in 2009, a new mast was required to accommodate new transmission equipment. This made the old structure redundant.
Made up of 54 sections, each around 6m long, the new mast was built alongside the existing structure and is slightly taller at 1,105ft (337m).
This made it one of the top three tallest structures in the UK at the time.
Caldbeck is Arqiva‘s main transmitter covering Cumbria, the Lake District and parts of the England-Scotland Borders.
More than 40 relay transmitters are fed from the main Caldbeck mast.
