You know the weather has been strange and a little bit out of the ordinary when the plants get confused.
Sitting on a window ledge at the top of our stairs is a small green plant with a bright red flower.
The Christmas Cactus or Schlumbergera, to give it it’s posh title, should not be in flower at this time of year but over recent days a number of flowers have appeared.
Originating in Brazil these plants are often to be found in rock crevices or even on trees in their native habitats.
In this country the plants are known to flower around December time – hence the unofficial name of Christmas Cactus.
Searching the web the plant has a number of other names depending on what country it is growing in. These include:
- Weihnachtskaktus in German
- Cactus de Noël in French
- Cacto de Navidad in Spanish
Easter Cactus
With the end of March in sight and our plant in flower, we were curious to see if our plant could be a variation of the plant called an Easter Cactus.
According to this website the Easter cactus blooms once a year, this one flowered profusely in December and is having another go so this quickly discounts our plant and confirms that it is confused by the recent cold weather and dark days.
