Work is underway to repair flood damage caused to the West Coast Main line near Carlisle.
During my walk this morning I peered through the bridge railings over the River Caldew and spotted that big diggers have been at work.
You may remember we reported in June 2012 that unseasonal flooding had caused damage to overhead rail equipment and the riverbank near to the castle.
At the time we said that almost 50m of retaining wall had collapsed and trains on the nearby West Coast main line were delayed.
New phase of work
Well, the view of the River has changed this week.
Large grey stone boulders, installed in the gap within days of the collapse, have been removed and a large amount of soil has also been excavated from the site.
Thick plastic sheeting covers the lower part of the area whilst tall fences line the perimeter.
It is not known if trains on the West Coast Main Line are being delayed whilst the work is being carried out.
I will try and monitor the works whilst out on my walks over the next few weeks and see if I can find out any more information.
