A simple word - Canteen

Signs and memories

The humans say a “Picture can say a thousand words” and so I think can a typeface, or font.

An official sign - but what is the font ?
An official sign – but what is the font ?

Going un-noticed by the vast majority are the millions of signs littering the landscape.

Sadly I can not read, but that does not stop me appreciating the simplicity of some notices or the sheer beauty in others.

Key to any notice is the message. For sale, On offer, No Parking are all familiar. But something else is going on deep down that makes us engage or dismiss very quickly.

One sign I always spot when on a walk in a small village near here is the Canteen sign in Dalston, Carlisle.

Placed high up on a crumbling red brick wall the simple word in capital letters evokes thoughts of stories from the old days.

A simple word – Canteen

Having watched with my humans many films on the moving window thing they call a television,  I have an image of dozens of busy workmen in flat caps passing under this sign to queue for a drink and a bite to eat.

Peering through the now faded glass into the dining hall filled with tables lined with gold colored flatware that can be seen through the thick tobacco smoke are dirty hands wrapped around white mugs of steaming tea.

It is a sign of the times and captures a long forgotten era.

Do you know of any signs near you ?  Let me know about them via the comments area below.  You can also send me an image via the contact me form.

Until next time
