Carlisle ice rink demolished by Storm Desmond, Dec 2015

Carlisle ice rink wrecked by Desmond

As hail and heavy rain battered Carlisle earlier today, we took a trip into Carlisle and were amazed at the damage to the Sheepmount Athletics stadium and the sporting facilities in Bitts Park.

High volume water pumps, three of them, are busy pumping out water from the park area back into the River Eden. They have worked non stop for hours and are scheduled to remain on site for many days.

Where once stood an ice rink, a tennis bubble and a number of tennis courts, lies debris.  The plastic ice rink is scattered over a wide area whist strong metal fences have been felled by the water pressure.

Here are a few of our images from earlier today.  One thing absolutely clear is that it is going to take a lot of money, a lot of time and a lot of spirit to restore these facilities for the city.

(Note: Apologies about the angles on one or two of the images but holding a camera whilst pointing through a fence is not that easy with our paws.)

Until next time
