Damage caused by Storm Desmond to the Hadrian’s Wall National Trail in Carlisle has caused disruption to the popular walking route which may last a year.
According to The National Trails website, the section between the Sands Centre to Engine Lonning is closed due to ‘catastrophic damage’ to the River Eden flood bank.
The website goes on to say that the route is: “Likely to remain closed throughout all of 2016.”
Tall metal barrier gates and fences secure all entrances to the large 30 acre site after floodwaters exposed electric cables and washed away flood prevention barriers over 50 years old.

Diverted National Trail
The section of Trail between the River Caldew in Bitts Park, Carlisle, and Engine Lonning, to the West of the City is now subject to a signed diversion on to the streets of the City.
Large acorns stuck to lampposts and street furniture indicate the diversion and provide a guide to those unfamiliar to the city.
A map has been produced showing the diversion. We would suggest that you print it out or note the route prior to setting out.
If you miss the signs
Planning is key to any adventure but we got caught out recently when we just went for a walk.
If you are not familiar with National Trail updates and like us are local, then you join paths and byways at random points just whilst out for a bit of fresh air.
Only one sign, a simple Footway Closed notice, advises of the need for a diversion through the Willowholme Industrial Estate. So take care, check the National Trails Website for updates or here for updates as we spot them.
