Builder of the first bridge over the Tay Estuary and many in Northern England, he was born here in February 1822, son of William Bouch: A captain in the Merchant Service and licenscee of the Ship inn.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Knighted and given the freedom of Dundee for his work, he died at Moffat in October in 1880, his life of achievement sadly blighted by faulty workmanship which led to the Tay Bridge collapse in 1879.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mrs Beeton &#8211; of cook book fame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A short way from the public house is the parish church of St Andrews&#8217;. \u00a0Damaged by <a title=\"Thursby Church fire\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/local\/cumbria\/hi\/people_and_places\/religion_and_ethics\/newsid_8399000\/8399201.stm\" target=\"_blank\">fire in 2009<\/a>\u00a0the church stands slightly raised on a hill above one end of the village.<\/p>\n<p>One unusual claim to fame for this Cumbrian location is its connection to the cookery legend known as Mrs Beeton.<\/p>\n<p>Born Isabella Mayson in 1836\u00a0her grandfather John Mayson was the curate of Thursby for many years.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4415\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4415\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4415\" alt=\"Fire beacon in Great Orton\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_03-203x152.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4415\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fire beacon in Great Orton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her father Benjamin was born in Thursby but moved south to London. When he died, aged 39, the young Isabella returned to live with her grandfather in what was then known as Cumberland.<\/p>\n<p>After about an hour spent wandering paths, pavements and verges we headed towards our second location for the day, Great Orton.<\/p>\n<p>This area shot to the international stage when the British Government used the nearby disused airfield for the burying of cattle and sheep as a result of the Foot and Mouth epidemic in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>The airfield has now become the <a title=\"Watchtree\" href=\"http:\/\/www.watchtree.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Watchtree<\/a> reserve and we hope to take a visit later in 2013, if we are allowed in?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4416\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4416\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4416\" alt=\"Mulhollands butchers and store in Great Orton\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04-203x152.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/thursby_gt_orton_ablogfrommydog_04.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mulhollands butchers and store in Great Orton<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The nearby village is not far from the airfield and all appears on the surface to have returned to normality. \u00a0The postman in his red van \u00a0goes about his duties whilst from the farm yard the aroma of rural life drifts across the village.<\/p>\n<p>We parked at one end of the north Cumbrian hamlet and set off on foot for the second adventure of the day.<\/p>\n<p>After a short while our noses started twitching as we came across Mulhollands Butchers. We sat on a nearby bench and helped eat those with the two leggers.<\/p>\n<h2>Great Orton Church<\/h2>\n<p>Tummies filled and paws rested we continued along the arterial road of the village until we came upon the church.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"St Giles, Great Orton\" href=\"http:\/\/www.stgilesgreatorton.org\" target=\"_blank\">St Giles\u00a0<\/a>is of Norman origin and has a spectacular view from the churchyard of the surrounding Carlisle valley.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4420\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4420\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a bit of a surprise and we stood for quite a few minutes whist we worked out our bearings and sought landmarks.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving us outside Dad ventured into the church where he spent a few minutes coloured light streaming through the stained glass windows made the building warm and inviting, he reported upon his return.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the church behind we started back through the village towards the car and our journey home.<\/p>\n<p>Both Great Orton and Thursby will be on our list of places to return to when we have a bit more time as we are sure that more adventuring is to be
