Work is underway to repair flood damage caused to the West Coast Main line near Carlisle.<\/p>\n

Overhead gantry collapses into River Caldew during 2012<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

During my walk this morning I peered through the bridge railings over the River Caldew and spotted that big diggers have been at work.<\/p>\n

You may remember we reported \u00a0in June 2012<\/a> that unseasonal flooding had caused damage to overhead rail equipment and the riverbank near to the castle.<\/p>\n

At the time we said that almost 50m of retaining wall had collapsed and trains on the nearby West Coast main line were delayed.<\/p>\n

New phase of work<\/strong><\/p>\n

Work starts to repair River Caldew embankment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Well, the view of the River has changed this week.<\/p>\n

Large grey stone boulders, installed in the gap within days of the collapse, \u00a0have \u00a0been removed and a large amount of soil \u00a0has also been excavated from the site.<\/p>\n

Thick plastic sheeting covers the lower part of the area whilst tall fences line the perimeter.<\/p>\n

It is not known if trains on the West Coast Main Line are being delayed whilst the work is being carried out.<\/p>\n

I will try and monitor the works whilst out on my walks over the next few weeks and see if I can find out any more information.<\/p>\n
