{"id":468,"date":"2008-11-18T19:28:55","date_gmt":"2008-11-18T18:28:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/?p=468"},"modified":"2009-01-25T18:41:31","modified_gmt":"2009-01-25T17:41:31","slug":"kirkby-stephen-to-hartley-our-adventures-continue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/2008\/11\/kirkby-stephen-to-hartley-our-adventures-continue\/","title":{"rendered":"Kirkby Stephen &#8211; to Hartley.. our adventures continue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After spending a few hours investigating <a title=\"Lighting up Appleby\" href=\"http:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/2008\/11\/putting-the-lights-up-in-appleby\/\" target=\"_blank\">Appleby<\/a> we have moved further down the A66 and, taking a right turn off the bypass, have arrived at <a title=\"Kirkby Stephen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkby-stephen.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kirkby Stephen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Being an ancient town it features many historical stories and old curiosities as well as all of the modern considerations of life.<\/p>\n<p>We parked the car in a free car park next to the auction market and walked into the town square, through a narrow alleyway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Exiting onto the main road crossedthe main road and into the main town square area.<\/p>\n<p>It looks as if this area has recently been redeveloped as it all looks clean and very tidy. \u00a0To our left is a church, in front a newsagents and just behind it the public toilets. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A sign on the wall indicated\u00a0Frank\u2019s Bridge, and bridges usually go over water and that means paddling. \u00a0We pulled mum and dad along as we searched for the fun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-502\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-502\" title=\"Up to our tummies in clear fresh water\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08-70x70.jpg 70w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08-110x110.jpg 110w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/ks_splodging_600_nov08-60x60.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Up to our tummies in clear fresh water<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Down some steps and between some houses we came upon the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>It is a narrow bridge with a low green bank on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>We crossed and swinging back on ourselves, scuttled into the cooling water of the River Eden.<\/p>\n<p>It became clear quite quickly that this water was quite cool so after filling ourselves up with water we escaped into the warmish winter sun and the rest of our explorations.<\/p>\n<p>We had a choice here, to follow the path ahead or to turn right and along a tarmac path.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given that we were soggy, we needed to stay out of the mud, so we opted for the path, following the river upstream.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-500\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/11\/ks_view1_nov08_6001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-500\" title=\"Ted Rushton - In loving memory of Ted Rushton who so enjoyed sitting here.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The path led through a metal kissing gate and up the side of quite a steep field.<\/p>\n<p>A number of seats were positioned to the left of the path so you could take in the ever changing view.<\/p>\n<p>The highest of these is dedicated to Ted Rushton and this is the view from it back towards the town.<\/p>\n<p>Through a big gate at the top of this field and we exit into the village of Hartley.<\/p>\n<p>Things got a little confusing here but we thought we should keep going up. \u00a0Just incase we were missing out on a good view. \u00a0So we turned right and came across a very old bridge<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_504\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-504\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2008\/11\/ks_bridge_plinth_nov08_600.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-504\" title=\"Stone slab and a few railings - a bridge<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It looked as if this solid stone plinth of a bridge had been here for hundreds of years. \u00a0The rusty railings did nothing to encourage you to use them for support.<\/p>\n<p>After crossing we pondered for a moment to get our bearings and to think about the history of the bridge.
