click on image to make larger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I am now well on the mend and slowly increasing the length of my walks, as I get match fit after a few days of rest, recuperation and general man flu.<\/p>\n<p>Given that I have not been exploring much ,I thought I would look back into my photo albums and catch up on a few stories.<\/p>\n<h3>Biscuit documentary<\/h3>\n<p>The change of daily life due to the Christmas holidays brought with it this year a few unusual tv programmes, and the chance to sit down as a family and watch them.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most thought provoking featured the <a title=\"Nigel Slater's Great British Biscuit\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03lyy33\" target=\"_blank\">humble British biscuit.<\/a> This was one television programme that kept prompting memories from the two leggers and made for compulsive viewing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4750\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4750\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4750\" alt=\"Nelson Mandela stone in Carlisle\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_03-203x152.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4750\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nelson Mandela stone in Carlisle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Presented by Nigel Slater it\u00a0explored the history of our most famous brands and uncovered the Georgian and Quaker origins of the biscuits we love and eat today.<\/p>\n<p>It is available on <a title=\"Nigel Slaters British Biscuit.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b03lyy33\" target=\"_blank\">BBC iPlayer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Nelson Mandela memorial<\/h3>\n<p>With the death of Nelson Mandela back in December and many of the news outlets reporting on any connection with the former\u00a0President of South Africa, we were quite amazed to find this memorial stone appears to have been forgotten about.<\/p>\n<p>Situated in the middle of the busiest roundabouts in Carlisle, Hardwick Circus, the flat dark stone has become weathered and quite hard to read.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4748\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4748\" alt=\"Traffic lights wireless connections\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_01-203x152.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Traffic lights wireless connections \u00a0&#8211; click on image to make larger<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We think the inscription says: This garden is dedicated to Nelson Mandela and the continuing campaign towards racial unity in South Africa February 1990.<\/p>\n<p>No other details are known about this stone or who commissioned it to be installed, so any help would be much appreciated, via the comments area below, lest it get lost to history.<\/p>\n<h5>Interconnected traffic lights?<\/h5>\n<p>Carlisle&#8217;s traffic lights have recently grown some new gadgetry and I am curious as to what it is and what it is for.<\/p>\n<p>White flat panels around 15cm square have appeared, clamped to brackets, atop many traffic lights in the city in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>One theory dad has is that the boffins from the council are interconnecting the lights using radio links to help with traffic flow.<\/p>\n<p>Another suggestion could be that the masts are to create a city wide data connection to offer wifi to visitors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4749\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-4749\" alt=\"A hard frost leaves behind great patterns\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/01\/ablogfrommydog_2014_02-203x152.jpg\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A hard frost leaves behind great patterns<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Personally, I think that they are being installed as part of a plan to provide perches for birds during their annual migrations through the area.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any suggestions, or actually know what they are for, then let us know in the comments area below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cold pooches<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As temperatures continue to be very low in the USA and Canada I just want to spare a few moments for my colleagues suffering freezing conditions.<\/p>\n<p>A number of news articles have appeared in the last few days highlighting concerns for animals left in the cold or not getting proper attention.<\/p>\n<p>One article in <a title=\"Officers Respond To 40 Cold Dog Calls\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theintelligencer.net\/page\/content.detail\/id\/594280\/Officers-Respond-To-40-Cold-Dog-Calls.html?nav=510\" target=\"_blank\">The Intelligencer \/ Wheeling News-Register\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0reports that officials have responded to more than 40 cold dog calls.<\/p>\n<p>Ohio County Dog Warden Doug McCroskey advises &#8220;keeping all dogs inside&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He adds: &#8220;Many people simply are ignorant of state laws and of how much a dog can tolerate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Good luck to all of my fellow pooches, I am thinking of you.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.5em; line-height: 1.5em;\">Rising fuel costs ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and if you are wondering about the headline for this article and the associated image, \u00a0it comes from a trawl of our photo archives from 2005.<\/p>\n<p>The price of 88.9p per litre sparked quite a conversation around the dinner table last night after dad spotted it.
