{"id":5322,"date":"2014-06-14T11:20:26","date_gmt":"2014-06-14T10:20:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/?p=5322"},"modified":"2014-06-14T11:20:26","modified_gmt":"2014-06-14T10:20:26","slug":"led-streetlights-switched-on-in-carlisle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/2014\/06\/led-streetlights-switched-on-in-carlisle\/","title":{"rendered":"LED streetlights switched on in Carlisle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something of a quiet revolution is taking place on the streets of Cumbria as revolutionary LED street lamps are being installed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5324\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5324\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5324\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_02-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"LED streetlights switched on in Carlisle\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5324\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LED streetlights switched on in Carlisle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fixed high on recently installed\u00a0metal poles the new\u00a0road lighting is being tested on Wigton Road in Carlisle.<\/p>\n<p>Bright white light beams downward from the thin lamp fittings currently being installed on the road leading to Caldewgate and the McVities roundabout.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Cabinet to approve energy saving street lights policy\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cumbria.gov.uk\/news\/2014\/may\/09_05_2014-135957.asp\" target=\"_blank\">Cumbria County Council<\/a> announced earlier this year that they are investing in the new energy efficient lights as replacements for the existing lighting infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a title=\"Clinton Climate Initiative\" href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/energy\/2011\/01\/110120-led-streetlights-ann-arbor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Clinton Climate Initiative<\/a>, street lighting accounts for a staggering 159 terawatt hours of electricity use worldwide each year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5323\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5323\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_01-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"Old and new streetlights side by side\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old and new compact streetlights side by side<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>LED street light<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Light Emitting Diodes (LED&#8217;s) are electronic gizmos that produce a lot of light for the amount of energy consumed. \u00a0This means that they are more efficient to run, produce less heat and last longer.<\/p>\n<p>Another advantage of using electronics is that the light output of the fittings can now be dimmed at certain times.<\/p>\n<p>For the bean counters in council offices it is almost a dream come true as they can claim savings, reductions in pollutants and many other headlines depending on what budget they wish to comment on.<\/p>\n<p>However, the new lighting is not without it&#8217;s critics. \u00a0A growing number of articles are being published on the internet and elsewhere complaining about the perceived\u00a0brightness of the LED lights in residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>Some critics also point to the intense blue-white light producing more <a title=\"Light pollution\" href=\"http:\/\/www.universetoday.com\/107372\/leds-light-pollution-solution-or-night-sky-nemesis\/\" target=\"_blank\">light pollution<\/a> that older &#8216;yellow&#8217; lights.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5325\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5325\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-5325\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/06\/led_streetlights_carlisle_03-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"LED streetlights appear brighter than old yellow lights\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5325\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LED streetlights appear brighter than old yellow lights<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The first street to be lit by an incandescent lightbulb was Mosley Street, in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK.
