The Redcoats are here!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1745 Jacobite uprising<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Novel, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/gp\/search\/ref=as_li_qf_sp_sr_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1634&amp;creative=6738&amp;index=aps&amp;keywords=Diana%20Gabaldon&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=ablogfrommydog-21&amp;linkId=FJF4BHEMOCJFDAXS\" target=\"_blank\">Diana Gabaldon&#8217;s<\/a> historical Outlander novel is set in 18th Century Scotland at the <a title=\"Diana Gabaldon tells of her inspiration for Outlander\" href=\"%20http:\/\/www.scotlandnow.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/outlander-creator-diana-gabaldon-kilts-4083075\" target=\"_blank\">height of the Jacobite rebellion.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carlisle Castle,<a title=\"History of Carlisle Castle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/daysout\/properties\/carlisle-castle\/history-and-research\/history\/4-civil-war\/\" target=\"_blank\"> the most besieged castle<\/a> in the British Isles, features in this time of great turmoil on the Scottish \/ English border.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5452\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5452\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-16.12.31.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5452\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-16.12.31-300x102.png\" alt=\"Historical image of Carlisle Castle during the Jacobite uprisings\" width=\"300\" height=\"102\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5452\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Historical image of Carlisle Castle during the Jacobite uprisings<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Jacobite rebellion of 1745 had much support in the then English county of Cumberland and when \u201cThe Young Pretender\u201d, Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) returned from exile in Europe, he and his supporters took the Scottish capital of Edinburgh and headed on south to take the border fortress of Carlisle Castle.<\/p>\n<p>On the 13th November 1745 Carlisle Castle was surrendered to the Jacobites but only a month later on the 21st December, the Duke of Cumberland&#8217;s army re-took the city of Carlisle and it&#8217;s Castle.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5453\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5453\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-16.02.04.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5453 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2014\/09\/Screen-Shot-2014-09-16-at-16.02.04-223x300.png\" alt=\"Entrance to the Dungeons of Carlisle Castle\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5453\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to the Keep and Dungeons of Carlisle Castle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jacobite soldiers were incarcerated in the dark, damp castle dungeons under the most dreadful of conditions.<\/p>\n<p>They were chained and forced to lick the stone of the walls in order to obtain some moisture.<\/p>\n<p>Those indented stones can be seen today by <a title=\"Visit Carlisle Castle\" href=\"http:\/\/www.english-heritage.org.uk\/daysout\/properties\/carlisle-castle\/\" target=\"_blank\">visitors<\/a> brave enough to enter the darkest recesses of the castle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Executed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1746 the Jacobite prisoners were hung, drawn and quartered at Gallows Hill in Carlisle and <a title=\"The Capon Tree Monument in Brampton, Cumbria\" href=\"%20http:\/\/www.gravestonepix.com\/contents1a\/2014\/09\/capon-tree-jacobite-monument\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Capon Tree <\/a>at nearby Brampton.<\/p>\n<p>In April 1746, The Jacobite cause ended when the army was massacred by the English government&#8217;s &#8220;Redcoats&#8221;
