Pitch black darkness, roads strewn with debris and christmas trees atop rows of yellow skips are some of the images conjured up of the floods<\/a> that affected Carlisle on the evening of Friday 7th January \u00a02005.<\/p>\n

With the weekend just beginning, heavy rainfall blanketed the northern fells and hills. This drained mainly into the River Eden resulting in the\u00a0worst flood to affect Carlisle since 1822.<\/p>\n

The Environment Agency Sheepmount measuring station recorded\u00a0a\u00a0flow\u00a0peak estimated to be 1520 m3\/s \u00a0at 1430hrs on Saturday 8th January.<\/p>\n

One estimate<\/a> put the resulting damage to property and infrastructure at \u00a3400m.<\/p>\n

Ten years have passed\u00a0and a lot of change has happened in the City.<\/p>\n

Caldewgate in the west has been totally redeveloped with a new supermarket.\u00a0A ring of\u00a0flood defences<\/a>, costing more than \u00a320m, now encircle the\u00a0historic central area and the Christmas trees have reappeared in the bay windows on Warwick Road.<\/p>\n

Throughout the decade we have\u00a0been documenting in our unique way some of these changes<\/a>.<\/p>\n
