What else can we discover?<\/p>\n<p>We did not have to wait long before large piles of rubble, stones, old bricks and general dirt could be seen across the tracks left by the dump truck.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5849\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5849\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5849\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-04-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Nellfield bricks are scatted in piles\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-04-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-04-590x330.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-04.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5849\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nellfield bricks are scatted in piles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Whatever was going on ahead of us must be quite an undertaking and involve some very large digging rabbits or some man made machines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nellfield Bricks recovered<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5845\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5845\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-5845\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-07-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Work is well underway on the West Coast main line bridge in Carlisle\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-07-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-07-590x330.jpg 590w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/carlisle-rail-bridge-repair-etterby-07.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5845\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Work is well underway on the West Coast main line bridge in Carlisle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Closer inspection of one of the debris piles revealed the name Nellfield stamped into some of the bricks. \u00a0It turns out\u00a0that the\u00a0Nellfield Brick and Tile Works\u00a0were based in\u00a0Braidwood, Lanarkshire between\u00a01893 to around\u00a01915.<\/p>\n<p>So these bricks were miles from home and possibly around 100 years old.<\/p>\n<h2>Main west coast rail bridge maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>Soon all was revealed as we approached the main West Coast rail line bridge that spans the River Eden between the Sheepmount area of the City and Etterby.<\/p>\n<p>Large bags of gravel, pontoon bridges and a complicated network of pipes and ducting had all been installed across the river to enable what appeared to be major works on one of the bridge piers.<\/p>\n<p>Clean white rocks could be seen relining the opposite river bank whilst an intricate web of metal rebar and shuttering surround the furthest bridge support.<\/p>\n<p>Workmen clad in bright orange boiler suits \u00a0could be seen all over the work site. It appears that local contractor, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.storycontracting.com\" target=\"_blank\">Story Contracting<\/a>\u00a0is in charge of the project.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time work has been carried out on this bridge in recent times. \u00a0During 2011 a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritageandhistory.com\/contents1a\/2011\/01\/walkway-removed-from-carlisle-rail-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rusty metal walkway was removed<\/a> in a project taking around a month to complete.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what work is being carried out and how much it is costing.
