A few weeks ago we mentioned that the rail bridge over the River Eden in Carlisle <\/a>was having a bit of work done to it, so we thought we would take a look to see how it is getting on.<\/p>\n

The new pier foundations stand clear of the River Eden in Carlisle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The men in the bright overalls have been working really hard it seems and two of the bridge supports are now sporting new steel reinforced foundations.<\/p>\n

Bright white concrete caps the new piers shaped with quite sharp points to deflect the flow of water and debris down the River Eden.<\/p>\n

The steel piles are driven into the river bed using a big vibration machine. \u00a0When it pushes the steel into the ground the earth under our paws quivered a little. Just as if we were back home in the kitchen and the washing machine was on fast spin.<\/p>\n

Sharp pointed concrete and hardened foundations should deflect the pressure of the River Eden<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Workmen have now moved closer to the Sheepmount side of the river to complete the work on the remaining West Coast main line bridge supports.<\/p>\n

We are still unable to find out how much this project is costing. It is also unclear if the project\u00a0is in response to any damage caused by the river undermining the foundations.<\/p>\n
