Carlisle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just off the Dalston Road in the south west corner of Carlisle lies the small village of <a title=\"Cummersdale\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cummersdale.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Cummersdale<\/a>. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Our walk starts on the far side of the village down by the River Caldew at map reference\u00a0NY393531.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_763\" factory gate. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The factory, hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the nearby City, is the\u00a0<a title=\"Stead McAlpin and Company Limited\" href=\"http:\/\/www.steadmcalpin.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Stead McAlpin<\/a>,\u00a0Cummersdale Print Works.<\/p>\n<p>To the right of the main gate is a tarmac path sandwiched between the factory, on our left and the river to our right.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nA word of caution here and we must say that the path is shared with cyclists, so take care not to get in the way.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe path is well maintained and is of a tarmac\u00a0construction\u00a0bordered by a wooden fence to one side so we feel safe and above all stay clean.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_764\" id=\"caption-attachment-764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wide paths keep us clean<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once the factory is behind us we exit onto some wide open fields with the path leading off into the distance.<\/p>\n<p>We see no evidence of sheep or cattle but to be sure, we stay on our leads. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We meet a number of colleagues happy to be out for their walks. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many are running free and throughly enjoying a good run as they can see their humans for quite a distance.<\/p>\n<p>The hedges to our left look as if they have been recently cut as they have sharp angular sides and a flat top.<\/p>\n<p>Mum keeps us away from them as she says that we\u00a0may get sharp clippings or thorns in our paws.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_765\" id=\"caption-attachment-765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Plenty of new sniffs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Charlie finds many new sniffs and has to investigate everything crossing back and forth across the path.<\/p>\n<p>Mum gets a little annoyed as our leads get caught up like the strings of a kite flying in a blustery wind. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many new green tubes seem to have been tied to sturdy wooden stakes along this part of the path. Dad explains that the tubes are protecting new trees growing inside from being eaten by rabbits and other animals. \u00a0They also act as a defence to strong winds and\u00a0extremes\u00a0in temperature<\/p>\n<p>After a few years the new trees will grow big and tall and be able to look after themselves as they poke their leaves above the tubes, he adds.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_766\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-766\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-766\" title=\"cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"Look at the view.\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic004.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-766\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Look at the view.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This area is known as <a title=\"Cummersdale Holmes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carlisle.gov.uk\/leisure_and_culture\/parks_and_open_spaces\/parks_and_open_spaces\/cummersdale_holmes.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Cummersdale Holmes<\/a> and is maintained by Carlisle City Council. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since the floods that affected large parts of the city \u00a0in 2005 this area has been classed a\u00a0floodwater storage zone. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the path for a minute or two we turn right towards the river and follow the line of a recently installed post and wire fence.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of us is the eastern outline of the city and slightly to the left are the large gasometers clearly\u00a0visible\u00a0towering above\u00a0neighboring\u00a0buildings on this edge of the city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_767\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-767\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-767\" title=\"cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005\" src=\"https:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005-203x152.jpg\" alt=\"That is not a big stick, Charlie.\" width=\"203\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005-203x152.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/03\/cummersdale_denton_h_mar09_pic005.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-767\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">That is not a big stick, Charlie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the bottom of this slight hill is what appears to be a wildlife pond behind a fence. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A notice clearly displayed warns of deep water so we keep away and continue towards the river.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Charlie stands at the river edge and looks down on to a rusting pipe.<\/p>\n<p>At some stage this was possibly covered by rocks and buried but the constant flow of water now has it revealed and the rust has started to form.<\/p>\n<p>We keep away from the river edge as it looks a little fragile and don&#8217;t want to fall in. A small notice a little further on warns mum and dad of the danger and they keep us on short leads for a few minutes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_768\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-768\" id=\"caption-attachment-768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entering Denton Holme close to the weir<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here we meet up with two scottie dogs out for a walk. \u00a0Their pristine white coats have a tideline of general dirt from their adventures. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because of their really short legs even dirty grass leaves a mark on their sides. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>We say hello and continue on our way. \u00a0Maybe our paths will cross when we return?<\/p>\n<p>Our grass path leads on to firmer footings as we leave the park area and exit to the rear of the former Ferguson Mill id=\"caption-attachment-769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The former Ferguson Brothers Mill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A once thriving cotton mill business the mill brought prosperity and employment to the City throughout the 1800\u2019s and into the latter half of the Twentieth Century.<\/p>\n<p>Ferguson Brothers Ltd opened the The Holme Head Works in 1824, although there was probably a mill on the site since Medieval times.<\/p>\n<p>The mill processed cotton brought in from the United States, through the Port of Whitehaven and for a short time, Port Carlisle.<\/p>\n<p>The sprawling complex has now been turned in to flats, sorry apartments, with some evidence still remaining of the buildings former life.<\/p>\n<p>Above, what was possibly the main doorway into the offices, is an inscription &#8216;Ferguson Brothers Limited Registered Office&#8217;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_770\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-770\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-770\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The flood defence work has raised the river wall<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Badly flooded in the storms of 2005 this area is undergoing flood defence work and river management to secure premises from any repeat damage.<\/p>\n<p>You can clearly see the new wall built on top of the old as we ran down to the water for a well earned drink and a paddle.<\/p>\n<p>It is hard to imagine that the water would even have been above my mums head as we mess about on this bit of shingle beach.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of us is not a tidal wave but the water cascading down a weir.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_771\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-771\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-771\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new bridge awaits installation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A salmon run is positioned in the middle of the fast flowing water to allow <a title=\"Nature of the River Caldew\" href=\"http:\/\/www.carlisle.gov.uk\/leisure_and_culture\/parks_and_open_spaces\/parks_and_open_spaces\/cummersdale_holmes\/cummersdale_wildlife.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">atlantic salmon<\/a> to return to the spawning grounds in late November to early January. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The source of the Caldew is on the western slopes of Skiddaw, with tributaries draining the western slopes of Great Calva, High Pike and the Caldbeck Fells.<\/p>\n<p>The works to protect this part of the city \u00a0involve replacing some of the old bridges that cross from the Denton Holme area in to the Boustead Grassing area of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Two bridge sections and \u00a0a works compound cause us to detour from the normal course of the path as we start to really appreciate the scale of the massive \u00a324m scheme.<\/p>\n<p>We are almost half a mile from where similar works have just finished in <a title=\"A Blog from My Dog\" href=\"http:\/\/ablogfrommydog.com\/contents1a\/2009\/02\/flowers-updates-floating-humans\/\" target=\"_blank\">Victoria Park <\/a>and these are only two locations of many dotted around the city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_772\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-772\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a recently installed completed bridges.<\/p>\n<p>The smooth white pillars of the new bridges will allow water to pass\u00a0uninterrupted\u00a0on the way to the River Eden about a mile away.<\/p>\n<p>With the photograph taken, we turn around and commence our return journey.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_773\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-773\" style=\"width: 203px\" flat top, is a magnet for young boys and Charlie is not the exception.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0desperately\u00a0wants to be lifted up and in the end dad gives in. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Charlie becomes king of the new scent as we\u00a0approach\u00a0the <a title=\"Pirelli Tyre factory\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pirelli.co.uk\/web\/technology\/plants\/Carlisle.page\" target=\"_blank\">Pirelli tyre factory<\/a> in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>You can faintly smell rubber in the air.<\/p>\n<p>It is not a bad nasty smell, just unusual if you have not experienced it before.<\/p>\n<p>We decide that we will take the path all the way home and avoid the river edge.<\/p>\n<p>The path would be ideal for child buggies, bikes and possibly wheelchairs if you have someone to push or a motorised unit. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These comments bring us on to the gates at either end of this path. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_776\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-776\" style=\"width: 203px\" class=\"wp-caption
